Despite the fact that the advantages of using solar energy far outweigh the disadvantages, especially environmentally and financially, it would not be fair to keep anyone misinformed.  Therefore we have listed the solar energy disadvantages below since it is important to understand all the implications of its utilization.  Please keep in mind that the intention here is not to sway one’s opinion or decision to install such an energy system.  It is merely done to provide you with the negatives as well as the positives of solar energy usage.

The primary disadvantage is the initial financial impact – typically, there are high costs associated with the equipment necessary to producing solar energy to power your home and/or office, as well the cost of its installation.  Most of the higher equipment costs revolve around the types of semi-conducting material used in the construction of the system.  Additionally, operating costs are now becoming more competitive among those standard energy providers due to increasing power outages and shortages.

The large amount of space that is required for the installation of the system – the second most important aspect where solar energy disadvantages are concerned is the amount of that is typically required for the placement of the system.  The larger your home or business is, the larger the system that is required to provide an efficient amount of electrical power needs to be.  Where there is a lack of space, the costs associated with the installation can be higher, such as in larger metropolitan areas.

Environmental factors can be a disadvantage where solar energy is concerned – although indirectly related, pollution is another major solar energy disadvantage in that it is usually harmful to solar cells and impedes their efficiency at producing sufficient power.  Climatic factors such as clouds and wind will reduce the potential energy that the sun’s heat and light can produce.  Despite innovative technologies in recent years, older solar energy systems are greatly affected by the above factors.

Night time renders your solar energy system useless – although this is obvious and common sense, the point is that when the sun is not shining you should make sure that there is a battery back-up system during dark hours.  Fortunately, most homes and businesses are not consuming much electrical power from the late evening into the early morning hours.

The efficiency of a solar energy system is directly relative to the location of the sun during daylight hours – this tends to be one of the more significant solar energy disadvantages, especially buildings within the city or certain natural facets of the landscape cause obstructions to the sun’s light.  It can obviously have a dramatic affect on the operation and the performance of your solar energy system.

Please keep in mind that the purpose of this content is not to influence anyone’s thinking and that that solar energy disadvantages were listed above to discourage the installation and use of such a system.  When you consider the environmental and financial benefits of powering your business or home with solar energy, those two factors alone are worth their weight in gold.
